A #smithingifted Thinking Lab Activity for K–2 Students

When most people hear “gifted or enrichment,” they imagine more worksheets and more practice questions.
I imagine something very different.
I imagine students putting on detective hats, grabbing magnifying glasses, and searching for clues hidden in colors, shapes, numbers, letters, and pictures.
That’s exactly why I created Pattern Detectives.
Instead of memorizing answers, students learn to notice, wonder, predict, and explain—the same thinking habits that strong problem-solvers use every day.
Why Patterns Matter
Pattern recognition is one of the earliest and most important thinking skills children develop.
It’s also a skill that appears throughout mathematics, reading, science, coding, music, engineering, and reasoning assessments like the CogAT.
When children learn to recognize patterns, they’re really learning to answer questions like:

- 🔍 What rule is hiding here?
