Launching Robotics Units with Picture Books: Fresh STEM Pairings for Gifted Learners

One of my favorite ways to introduce a new robotics unit is with a great story.
A carefully chosen picture book creates curiosity, sparks questions, and provides an authentic context for students before they ever touch a robot.
In our gifted classroom, robotics is never just about coding. It’s about creativity, innovation, problem-solving, and making connections to the real world.
Here are some of my favorite picture book pairings for Dash, CoDrones, Micro:bit, Hummingbird Robotics, Sphero, and Jr. Botball.
🤖 Dash Robot + The Wild Robot
The Wild Robot
Big Idea:
Can technology adapt and thrive in a natural environment?
Roz, a robot stranded on an island, learns to survive and build relationships with animals. My 3-5th grade students absolutely loved this book. We read it right before the movie came out so they were telling me all about the movie after they saw it.

Robotics Challenge:
Create a wilderness obstacle course and program Dash to complete survival missions.
Students might:
- Navigate rough terrain
- Deliver supplies
- Rescue stranded animals
- Transport resources
Gifted Extension:
Students redesign Dash for a specific ecosystem and justify their engineering choices.
🚁 CoDrones + Flight School
Flight School
Big Idea:
Persistence can overcome obstacles.
A penguin dreams of flying despite everyone telling him it’s impossible.

Robotics Challenge:
Students investigate the science of flight using CoDrones.
Questions include:
- What makes flight possible?
- How does lift work?
- How do drones maintain stability?
Gifted Extension:
Students design a drone mission to deliver supplies to remote locations.
💡 Micro:bit + Papa’s Mechanical Fish
Papa’s Mechanical Fish
Big Idea:
Inventors solve problems by thinking differently.
Inspired by the true story of Lodner Phillips, this book celebrates creativity and invention.

Robotics Challenge:
Students use Micro:bits to design and code a prototype invention.
Ideas include:
- Environmental monitors
- Smart classroom tools
- Safety devices
- Communication systems
Gifted Extension:
Students create invention portfolios documenting their design process.
🦜 Hummingbird Robotics + Boxitects
Boxitects
Big Idea:
Collaboration strengthens innovation.
Meg loves building with boxes and learns that working with others can improve her designs.
Robotics Challenge:
Students build interactive robotic structures using Hummingbird Robotics.
Projects may include:
- Smart homes
- Animal habitats
- Theme parks
- Future schools
Gifted Extension:
Students work in engineering teams and assign specialized roles.
⚽ Sphero + The Book of Mistakes
The Book of Mistakes
Big Idea:
Mistakes can become opportunities.
This beautiful story demonstrates how unexpected errors can lead to amazing creations.
Robotics Challenge:
Students complete Sphero challenges that intentionally include obstacles and setbacks.
Students learn to:
- Debug programs
- Revise solutions
- Improve designs
Gifted Extension:
Students maintain an “Innovation Through Mistakes” reflection journal.
🏆 Jr. Botball + Manfish: A Story of Jacques Cousteau
Manfish: A Story of Jacques Cousteau
Big Idea:
Exploration leads to discovery.
Students learn how Cousteau used technology and innovation to explore the oceans.

Robotics Challenge:
Design and program robots to explore an underwater-themed challenge course.
Possible missions:
- Collect samples
- Rescue marine animals
- Map underwater environments
- Monitor pollution
Gifted Extension:
Students connect robotics to environmental stewardship and conservation.
🌎 Beyond Coding
When students hear a story before beginning a robotics challenge, they don’t just learn how technology works.
They begin asking bigger questions:
- How can innovation improve lives?
- What problems need solving?
- How do engineers think?
- How can technology help our communities?
These are the kinds of questions that transform robotics from a STEM activity into a powerful gifted learning experience.
Whether students are coding Dash, flying CoDrones, inventing with Micro:bits, building with Hummingbird Robotics, navigating with Sphero, or competing in Jr. Botball, every challenge becomes more meaningful when it starts with a story.
Because every great innovation begins with imagination.
And every great imagination begins with a story.
