Dash Robot meets Our Hometown

One of my favorite ways to teach coding is by making it feel like a real-world mission.
The Dash Robot “Our Hometown” Bot Mat does exactly that.
Instead of having students simply drive Dash forward, backward, left, and right, this mat turns coding into a community-based challenge. Students navigate roads, follow traffic rules, visit important places, and solve problems that connect directly to how towns work.
And the best part?
Students are not just coding.
They are thinking like city planners, engineers, problem-solvers, community helpers, and responsible citizens.
That is where the magic happens. ✨
What Is the “Our Hometown” Bot Mat?
The Our Hometown Bot Mat is a colorful town map designed for Dash Robot coding challenges.
The mat includes familiar community locations such as:
- School
- Library
- Hospital
- Fire Station
- Grocery Store
- Police Station
- Bank
- Café
- Pet Shop
- Gas Station
- Train Station
- Bus Station
- Construction Site
- Post Office
- Park
It also includes coding-friendly features like roads, crosswalks, traffic lights, stop signs, checkpoints, and a mission complete area.
Students begin at Start Here and program Dash to move through the town while following specific mission rules.
Why This Works So Well in the Gifted Classroom
Gifted students need more than “make the robot move.”
They need complexity.
They need constraints.
They need problems with more than one possible solution.
They need tasks that require strategy, flexibility, and justification.
This bot mat allows students to practice coding while also developing:

✅ spatial awareness
✅ map-reading skills

✅ computational thinking

When students code Dash through the town, they must think ahead, test their plan, debug mistakes, and explain their choices.

A Quick Lesson Idea: Community Helper Mission 🚦
Challenge:
Dash needs to help the town by completing three community missions.
Student Task:
Students choose three locations Dash must visit. For example:
- Start at the robot launch area.
- Drive to the school to pick up supplies.
- Visit the hospital to deliver them.
- Stop at the fire station for an emergency update.
- End at Mission Complete.
Coding Requirement:
Students must program Dash to complete the route using:
- Forward movements
- Left and right turns
- Stop signs
- Traffic light rules
- At least one checkpoint
- A final celebration sound or light sequence
Gifted Twist:
Students must explain why their route is the most efficient, safest, or most helpful for the town.
This turns a simple robot activity into a reasoning task.
Add Real-World Thinking with Town Rules 🛑
One of the strongest parts of this mat is that students cannot just race through town.
They have to follow rules.
Students must:
- Stop at stop signs
- Obey traffic lights
- Use crosswalks appropriately
- Stay on roads
- Avoid unsafe zones
- Help people in the community
This gives you a natural way to connect coding with responsibility.
Students quickly realize that a successful code is not just one that gets Dash from Point A to Point B.
A successful code follows the rules of the system.
That is a big idea.
