Learning purpose

Teachers identify specific learning targets a student has already mastered, document the evidence, and replace that instruction time with planned new learning. This toolkit is a planning aid only; it does not create or change student compacting records.

Materials

  • Unit learning targets
  • Pre-assessment with explanation and transfer items
  • Mastery evidence tracker
  • Compacting decision organizer and replacement-learning plan

Skills developed

  • Self-monitoring
  • Goal setting
  • Independent learning
  • Reflecting on growth

Why this works for gifted learners

The UConn Renzulli Center describes compacting as defining objectives, identifying who has mastered them, and offering new, challenging alternatives in place of mastered work. It avoids assigning extra routine work to students who already know the material.
