What It Is
Identify specific learning targets already mastered, document the evidence, reduce instruction or practice only for those targets, and replace that time with purposeful learning.
Why It Works
The UConn compacting procedure links demonstrated mastery to replacement instruction, rather than using early completion as a reason to assign additional routine work.
When to Use It
Use when multiple pieces of current evidence demonstrate mastery of particular targets. A fast finish or one overall score is not enough.
Classroom Example
A learner explains and transfers equivalent-fraction reasoning but has gaps in fraction comparison. Compact only the mastered equivalence practice; teach comparison and schedule a pattern investigation during released time.
Teacher Implementation Steps
- List the unit targets and acceptable mastery evidence.
- Pre-assess with explanation and transfer tasks; review existing work.
- Record which targets are mastered and which still need instruction.
- Agree on replacement learning, support and checkpoints.
- Monitor new learning and revisit the plan with the learner.
Student Activity
With your teacher, choose a replacement investigation, explain the new learning you will pursue, and collect evidence for a review conference.
Grade-band adaptations
K–2: use brief conferences and manipulatives. 3–5: combine short tasks with explanation. 6–8: document target-specific evidence and independent work checkpoints.
Readiness is a planning suggestion, not a placement decision. Adjust support using current evidence; keep needed accommodations and teacher review.
