One of the most exciting tools in our gifted classroom is our Dremel 3D Printer. While many people think of 3D printing as simply making fun toys or gadgets, my students quickly discover that it is much more than that—it’s a tool for solving real problems.
Every project begins with a question:
What problem needs solving?
That simple question transforms students from learners into engineers, inventors, designers, and entrepreneurs.
Why 3D Printing Belongs in Gifted Education
Gifted students thrive when they are challenged with authentic, open-ended problems. A 3D printer provides opportunities for students to:
- Think critically
- Design creative solutions
- Test prototypes
- Analyze failures
- Improve designs through iteration
- Present evidence-based solutions

Rather than completing worksheets, students become inventors.
The Engineering Design Process
Every project follows a simple process:
🔍 Ask – What problem are we trying to solve?
🧠 Imagine – Brainstorm several possible solutions.
✏️ Plan – Sketch ideas and discuss advantages and disadvantages.
💻 Design – Build the model using Tinkercad or another CAD program.
🖨️ Create – Print the prototype using the Dremel 3D printer.
🧪 Test – Does it work?
🔄 Improve – Redesign and print again.
Students quickly learn that the first design is rarely the best design—and that’s where real learning happens.
Real-World Projects for Grades 3–5
🐟 Saving the Pecos Pupfish
One of our favorite interdisciplinary projects challenges students to create solutions that help protect the endangered Pecos Pupfish.
Students research the species, identify environmental challenges, and design possible solutions such as:
- Fish habitat models
- Water flow devices
- Educational displays
- Conservation tools
This project combines science, engineering, environmental stewardship, and design thinking.
🤖 Robotics Attachments
Students create accessories that improve our robotics equipment, including:
- Dash Robot attachments
- Micro:bit holders
- Sphero launch ramps
- Cable organizers
- Robot carrying handles
They quickly learn that engineers often improve existing products instead of inventing something completely new.
🌎 Our Hometown Innovation Challenge
As part of our Our Hometown project, students identify challenges within the Roswell community and design possible solutions.
Ideas include:
- Playground improvements
- Tourism souvenirs
- Park enhancements
- Water conservation devices
- Recycling tools
- School organization systems
Students interview others, gather feedback, and redesign their prototypes before presenting their final ideas.
🏫 Classroom Problem Solvers
Some of the best inventions come from everyday classroom frustrations.
Students have created ideas for:
- Pencil organizers
- Headphone holders
- Nameplate clips
- Book page holders
- Desk supply organizers
- Chromebook cable clips
- Whiteboard marker holders
The best inventions often solve small problems that many people experience.
🌱 Sustainability Projects
Students explore ways to improve our environment by designing:

Sometimes the measurements are wrong.
Instead of becoming discouraged, students learn to ask:
“What can I improve?”
That mindset is far more valuable than any single printed object.
