Why Every Gifted/STEM Classroom Needs Picture Books About Robotics and Innovation

When most people think about robotics, coding, and engineering, they imagine students sitting behind computers, building robots, or programming complex systems.
But one of the most powerful STEM tools in my gifted classroom isn’t a robot at all.
It’s a picture book.
While robotics kits, coding platforms, and engineering challenges provide incredible hands-on learning opportunities, picture books help students develop the curiosity, creativity, perseverance, and innovative thinking that make STEM learning meaningful.
Why Picture Books Belong in STEM
Gifted students often love diving straight into a challenge. They want to build, create, design, and solve problems immediately.
Picture books provide an important foundation by helping students:
✅ Develop empathy
✅ Explore real-world problems
✅ Learn about inventors and innovators
✅ Build perseverance
✅ Understand the engineering design process
✅ Connect STEM concepts to human experiences
Most importantly, picture books help students see that innovation begins with an idea.
My Favorite STEM and Robotics Picture Books
📚 Rosie Revere, Engineer
by Rosie Revere, Engineer
This is one of my favorite books to introduce engineering and perseverance.
Rosie loves inventing, but after experiencing failure, she becomes hesitant to share her ideas. Her great-great-aunt teaches her that failure isn’t something to fear—it’s part of the engineering process.
Gifted Connection:
Students often struggle with perfectionism. Rosie helps students understand that mistakes are valuable learning opportunities.
Extension Activity:
Challenge students to design a solution to a classroom problem using recycled materials.
📚 Ada Twist, Scientist
by Ada Twist, Scientist
Ada asks questions about everything.
Sound familiar?
This book celebrates curiosity and inquiry while demonstrating the importance of observation, investigation, and experimentation.
Gifted Connection:
Perfect for students who constantly ask “Why?”
Extension Activity:
Create an “Ada Investigation Notebook” where students record observations and wonderings.
📚 The Most Magnificent Thing
by The Most Magnificent Thing
An inventor sets out to create something magnificent but quickly discovers that innovation is harder than it looks.
This book beautifully illustrates frustration, iteration, and persistence.
Gifted Connection:
Helps students understand that great ideas often require multiple revisions.
Extension Activity:
Build a prototype, test it, revise it, and document each version.

Connecting Picture Books to Robotics
One of my favorite strategies is pairing picture books with robotics challenges.
For example:
Rosie Revere + Dash Robots
Students design an invention and program Dash to demonstrate how it works.

Ada Twist + CoDrones
Students investigate a question about flight and collect data using drones.
The Most Magnificent Thing + Makerspace
Students repeatedly redesign a robot attachment or engineering prototype.
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind + Global Innovation Lab
Students explore community problems and create innovative solutions.
The picture book provides the inspiration.
The robotics challenge provides the application.
Together, they create powerful learning experiences.
Beyond STEM: Developing Future Innovators
In gifted education, our goal is not simply to teach students how to code or build robots.
Our goal is to develop innovators.
Innovators are curious.
Innovators ask questions.
Innovators embrace failure.
Innovators solve problems.
Innovators make the world better.
Picture books help students understand these qualities long before they master advanced technology.
Final Thoughts
The next time you pull out your robots, coding platform, or STEM materials, consider starting with a picture book.
A great story can spark curiosity, inspire creativity, and launch an engineering challenge that students remember long after the lesson is over.
Sometimes the path to innovation begins not with a robot…
but with turning the first page of a great book.
