Using STEM Biographies to Launch Robotics and Coding Units in the Gifted Classroom

One of the questions I hear most often from gifted students is:

“When will I ever use this?”

It’s a fair question.

Why learn to code?

Why build robots?

Why study engineering?

Why solve complex problems?

One of the best ways I’ve found to answer these questions is through biographies.

When students read about inventors, engineers, computer scientists, astronauts, and entrepreneurs who changed the world, robotics suddenly becomes more than a classroom activity.

It becomes a tool for innovation.

In our gifted classroom, we often begin robotics units by studying real people who used creativity, perseverance, and technology to solve meaningful problems.

These stories help students see themselves not just as learners—but as future innovators.


🤖 Dash Robotics + Inventors

📚 Who Were the Wright Brothers?

Who Were the Wright Brothers?

The Wright brothers weren’t born as aviation experts.

They were bicycle mechanics.

Through curiosity, experimentation, and persistence, they transformed transportation forever.

Robotics Connection

Students use Dash Robots to:

  • Test movement challenges
  • Design transportation solutions
  • Explore iterative design
  • Create obstacle-course prototypes

Gifted Challenge

Ask students:

“What transportation problem still exists today?”

Students design a robot-based solution.

From Reading About Innovators to Becoming Innovators

The goal of robotics isn’t simply teaching students how to code.

The goal is helping students recognize that they can solve problems.

Biographies help gifted students understand that every inventor, entrepreneur, engineer, scientist, and astronaut started exactly where they are today:

With curiosity.

With questions.

With challenges.

With ideas.

When students read about real innovators and then immediately apply those lessons through robotics, coding, and engineering, something powerful happens.

They stop asking:

“When will I ever use this?”

And start asking:

“What problem can I solve next?”

And that is when true innovation begins.

Because the future isn’t built by students who memorize answers.

It’s built by students who learn from innovators and become innovators themselves.
