Essential question

How can understanding numbers, mathematical relationships, patterns, and problem-solving strategies help us think more deeply and solve increasingly challenging problems?

Academy mission

Help second-grade students develop strong mathematical understanding, recognize relationships, solve unfamiliar problems, explain their reasoning, and pursue advanced mathematics when they demonstrate readiness.

Welcome, investigator

Welcome to the Grade 2 Math Acceleration Academy!

You’re about to become a mathematical investigator!

You’ll explore numbers, discover patterns, solve mysteries, build mathematical models, and tackle challenges that make your brain work in new ways.

Some concepts may be familiar. Others may be brand new.

You’ll discover what you already know, learn what you need, and explore more challenging mathematics when you’re ready.

Your mission is to think, investigate, explain, and prove your mathematical ideas!

Pre-Assess → Compact → Deepen → Accelerate → Apply → Prove

Four pathways, chosen skill by skill

BUILD

Foundational teaching, worked examples, visual supports and guided practice.

MASTER

Targeted instruction that closes specific gaps.

DEEPEN

Complex investigations, multiple representations, error analysis and justification.

ACCELERATE

Sequenced advanced concepts from the Grade 3 or beyond.

📐 Grade 2 standards map

Grade 3 concepts appear only as labeled acceleration and never count toward Grade 2 mastery.

Domain 1 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking

  • 2.OA.A.1 Solve one- and two-step addition and subtraction word problems within 100, with unknowns in all positions.
  • 2.OA.B.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.
  • 2.OA.C.3 Determine whether groups up to 20 are odd or even.
  • 2.OA.C.4 Use addition to find totals in rectangular arrays up to 5 rows and 5 columns.

Domain 2 — Number & Operations in Base Ten

  • 2.NBT.A.1–4 Understand place value through 1,000; count, read, write, represent, compare and order numbers.
  • 2.NBT.B.5–9 Use place value and properties to add and subtract: fluency within 100, adding several two-digit numbers, within 1,000 with models, mental ±10/±100, explaining strategies.

Domain 3 — Measurement & Data

  • 2.MD.A.1–4 Measure and estimate lengths.
  • 2.MD.B.5–6 Solve length word problems; represent whole numbers as lengths on number lines.
  • 2.MD.C.7–8 Tell time to the nearest five minutes; solve problems with dollar bills and coins.
  • 2.MD.D.9–10 Generate measurement data; represent data with line plots, picture graphs and bar graphs.

Domain 4 — Geometry

  • 2.G.A.1–3 Recognize and draw shapes with given attributes; partition rectangles into rows and columns; partition circles and rectangles into halves, thirds and fourths.
